innovations and innovative approaches are
contributing to a culture of change in our region.

Society Fellow:
Dr. Robert Cornwell

Innovation:  
Calumet Astronomical Learning Facility

Robert Cornwell, M.D. is founder of the
Calumet Astronomical Learning Facility to
encourage the study of the stars at the
Buckley Homestead, Lake County Parks. Dr.
Cornwell has provided dynamic leadership and
vision based upon “thinking outside of the
educational box.”

Society Fellow:
Brandon Griffin

Innovation:
Fye-Bye Magazine
Quality Web Solutions

“Brandon is a young entrepreneur who
has launched two endeavors by the age
of 12 and creating web designs at the
age of 10: Quality Web Solutions, a web
design and consulting firm, and BGL
Publishing, a publishing firm that is
printing FyeBye Magazine. Brandon is
also a gifted student at Gary West Side,
a speaker, author, a philanthropist, and
advisor/consultant.” In July of this year,
he was named by Indiana Black Expo,
the Youth Entrepreneur of the Year.
Brandon was also named by the Post-
Tribune as a Northwest Indiana Future
Leader for 2006.

Daniel Hayes

Innovation:
HealthCall, LLC

Created, tested and launching an
advanced patient monitoring system
utilizing the telephone and the web for
chronic disease management that
provides better, more informed
communication between patients and their
healthcare providers.  It greatly reduces
the cost of chronic disease management,
empowers the patient more directly via an
automated response system, and
consistently gives better information to
doctors and nurses about patients from
remote locations utilizing the Internet.

Gayle Koselko   

Innovations:
Pierogifest

“Gayle embodies and defines the spirit of
Pierogifest, a charming tongue-in-cheek
celebration of the tapestry of ethnic
heritages that gave birth to Whiting.
Through her efforts over the past 8 years,
Pierogifest has come to define the city
and has drawn literally hundreds of
thousands of people from across the
globe to visit and shop in Whiting. The
Pierogifest, by being pure fun, is simply
one of the most important economic
engines of the community.”

Gerald I. Lamkin Fellow:
Dr. Greg Ludkovsky

Innovation:
16 patents in the steel industry, authored
numerous papers for publications, and
shaped steel industry over nearly past 30
years

Under his leadership, a new generation of
advanced high strength steel has been
developed.  These steels became material of
choice for the automakers in their quest to
provide higher level of safety while reducing fuel
consumption. He describes these as “leapfrog”
steels, breakthrough products that have
“leapfrogged” industry standards.

“Patented and built all the telescoping
piers with lights in Michigan City, New
Buffalo, MI; St. Joseph, MI, as well as the
telescoping flag poles which fly in front of
the John Hancock Building in Chicago and
many buildings. He’s been a great lifetime
innovator for the Northwest Indiana
region. The Donkersloot Barge was
credited with saving the boats and docks
in Michigan City, IN during the recent
storms that swept across NWI during late
August, 2006.”
